
Dr. Josef Allen Hynek was an American astronomer, astrophysicist, educator, and science administrator whose career encompassed stellar astronomy, satellite tracking, atmospheric and space-based observational astronomy, and the scientific investigation of reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs). Although he became internationally known for his later work on UFO phenomena, his professional career was firmly rooted in academic astronomy and space science, and he made important contributions to the development of American astronomical research during the early Space Age.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 1st. 1910 to parents of Czechoslovak origin, Hynek graduated from Crane Technical High School before entering the University of Chicago, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in 1931 and a Ph.D. in astrophysics in 1935. During his graduate studies he worked at Yerkes Observatory, developing research interests in stellar spectroscopy, F-type stars, and stellar scintillation, subjects that remained central to his scientific work throughout his academic career.
In 1936 he joined Ohio State University as an instructor in physics and astronomy, becoming assistant professor in 1939. During the Second World War he took leave from the university to work at the Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University, where he participated in the development of the Navy's radio proximity fuze. Returning to Ohio State in 1946, he became associate professor and director of the McMillin Observatory, and in 1950 was promoted to full professor while also serving as assistant dean of the Graduate School.
In 1956 Hynek joined the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory under Fred L. Whipple to help organize the optical satellite-tracking program established for the International Geophysical Year. As associate director of the program, he helped develop a worldwide network of optical observing stations designed to monitor artificial satellites. Hynek's research interests extended beyond conventional ground-based astronomy.
Beginning in the late 1950s he became a leading advocate of balloon-borne astronomical observatories through Project Star Gazer, an Air Force-funded programme intended to place a high-powered telescope above much of the Earth's atmosphere in order to overcome atmospheric turbulence and observe wavelengths inaccessible from the ground. Conceived as an extension of his earlier investigations of stellar scintillation, the project sought to demonstrate the scientific advantages of high-altitude astronomical observation. Despite the development of an advanced pressurized gondola and several attempted launches, repeated technical failures prevented the mission from obtaining useful scientific data, and Air Force support was eventually withdrawn. Hynek strongly criticized the decision, believing the programme represented an important step toward the future of observational astronomy. Although Project Star Gazer itself proved unsuccessful, the experience reinforced his conviction that astronomical observatories should ultimately be placed beyond the Earth's atmosphere. He subsequently proposed a remotely operated Lunar Vacuum Observatory and anticipated many of the scientific advantages later realized by orbital observatories such as the Hubble Space Telescope.
In 1960 Hynek accepted the chairmanship of the Department of Astronomy at Northwestern University, where he also directed the Dearborn Observatory. During his tenure the department expanded considerably in size, faculty, and research activity. He established new observational facilities, including image orthicon telescopes at the Organ Mountain Observatory in New Mexico and at Dearborn Observatory, while continuing active research and graduate instruction. He was remembered by colleagues and students as an engaging teacher whose enthusiasm for astronomy combined with intellectual curiosity and an unconventional personality.
Alongside his academic career, Hynek served from 1948 until 1969 as scientific consultant to the United States Air Force investigations of unidentified flying objects, including Projects Sign, Grudge, and most notably Project Blue Book. Initially appointed to identify conventional astronomical explanations for reported sightings, he examined thousands of reports over more than two decades. His extensive familiarity with the accumulated evidence gradually convinced him that a small but persistent residue of carefully documented cases remained unexplained and warranted systematic scientific investigation. Increasingly dissatisfied with what he regarded as the Air Force's emphasis on providing reassuring explanations rather than conducting objective research, he argued that the phenomenon should be approached as a legitimate empirical problem.
His changing views became widely known following the controversial investigation of reported sightings in Michigan in 1966. Although he attributed some observations to luminous swamp gas, the explanation was widely criticized and became a turning point in his public position. Thereafter he openly advocated a more rigorous and dispassionate scientific examination of unexplained reports, rejecting both unquestioning belief and automatic dismissal.
After the termination of Project Blue Book in 1969, Hynek devoted much of his attention to independent research on unidentified aerial phenomena. His book The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry (1972) proposed a systematic classification of reported encounters and introduced the terminology of "close encounters of the first, second, and third kind," expressions that rapidly entered both scientific discussion and popular culture. In 1973 he founded the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS), an independent organization intended to preserve investigative records, encourage critical evaluation of reports, and promote scientific research into anomalous aerial phenomena.
His work achieved worldwide public recognition when Steven Spielberg adopted the title Close Encounters of the Third Kind for his 1977 film inspired in part by Hynek's terminology and research. Hynek served as technical adviser to the production and made a brief cameo appearance, while continuing to emphasize the distinction between scientific investigation and popular entertainment.
Hynek retired from Northwestern University in 1978 but remained active as director of the Center for UFO Studies, first in Evanston, Illinois, and later in Scottsdale, Arizona. Despite persistent financial difficulties, the Center became an important repository for documentary material relating to unidentified aerial phenomena and continued the programme of research that he had envisioned.
Hynek died in Scottsdale, Arizona, on 27 April 1986 from a malignant brain tumour, four days before his seventy-sixth birthday. His scientific legacy extends beyond the field for which he became best known. As an astronomer he contributed to stellar astrophysics, astronomical instrumentation, satellite tracking, and early concepts of space-based observatories. Through his insistence that reports of unidentified aerial phenomena should be subjected to impartial scientific scrutiny rather than ideological dismissal, he also became the central figure in the effort to establish the subject as a legitimate field of empirical inquiry, a legacy that continues to be debated by astronomers, historians of science, and researchers of anomalous phenomena.
