Purpose of the flight and payload description

Objective of the flight was to obtain information about the performance in flight in terms of strength and reliability of a balloon made of ASTROFILM polyethilene. This was the first stratospheric balloon launched by the National Scientific Balloon Facility (NSBF) from the Airport of Ft. Sumner.

The balloon was launched at 16:15 UTC on March 2nd 1987, from the Ft. Sumner airport in New Mexico. After launched, the balloon drifted NE at 120.000 ft and remained at that altitude during four and a half hours, before landing SW of Lawton, Oklahoma.
