Purpose of the flight and payload description

The Biosatellite nose-cone balloon tests were a series of high-altitude engineering flights conducted in 1965 by the U.S. Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories (AFCRL) in support of NASA's Biosatellite program. Their purpose was to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics and recovery system of the Biosatellite reentry capsule before orbital missions.

The tests consisted of releasing instrumented nose-cone mockups from stratospheric balloons at altitudes between 88,000 and 100,000 ft (27–30 km) over the White Sands Missile Range. Following release, the vehicles underwent a free-fall trajectory in atmospheric conditions that closely reproduced the aerodynamic environment encountered during the terminal phase of spacecraft reentry. Measurements focused on the performance of the drogue deployment mechanism, the operation of the main parachute system, descent rate, vehicle stability and oscillation, and impact velocity.

The results validated critical elements of the capsule recovery system and contributed to the qualification of the Biosatellite reentry vehicle for subsequent orbital missions.
